in order to get to the point faster I'm going to go ahead and put the "disclaimer" at the end, if you want to post, please read that first.
i guess the best way to begin this little rant is from the beginning, with a story. you see i didn't even know anti-mlp groups existed until one fateful day on furaffinity, i remember it like it was a few months ago. this was a time when i actually wanted to get a little more involved on the furaffinity forums. mainly i was looking for people around my area to make friends with, i wanted to get a group of people together to go to anthrocon. anyhow one such thread that caught my eye was on the rant section of the forum. it was basically a "i don't like mlp and this is why" thread. now i cannot link to this thread, because its locked, and i cannot remember what the OP said. but i do remember one particular person who really stood out and is the topic of this little story here. now i don't like to point fingers, I'm probably going to say this multiple times but I'm not going to say who this person is. but he came on there and put his two cents worth in. i didnt particularly get the most civil vibe from his post, could have been the multiple insults directed towards bronies, i don't know. now, yes, he got a lot of flack, i would like to say all of it was just people pointing out "flaws" in what he was saying, and or just retaliating, but I'm sure we both know better then that. needless to say he took it well, and by taking it well i mean he started RAGING. i have never EVER seen someone rage that hard outside of an online game. i started to get concerned with him, telling him to seriously just drop it and leave because this is only going to get worse. how does this connect to the topic at hand? well he posted links, a few of them were to a group that i am kind of focusing on when I'm talking here. okay, that's probably a bit of an exaggeration. again it was a while back and i only remember the big details, what i don't remember is exactly what he posted. i know it was a lot of hate towards bronies/proof of brony insanity. what i don't remember is if he actually linked to the group, or if i went to his profile and found the group in his list of groups. I'm actually pretty sure it was the latter, hey at least I'm being honest.
so that brings us to our topic, anti mlp groups. this isn't the first time I've come across an anti group, being a furry, its not hard to find them. the first one i saw seriously kind of threw me into a rage, i posted a WALL of text talking about just how stupid that group was. now i don't intend on doing THAT with mlp is crap, mainly because i get the feeling they aren't all bad, and they aren't just there to talk shit all the time. but i do have a few problems here and there.
i think one of my biggest problems is just the whole anti group in general. at best anti groups are there to have a few laughs and poke fun at something they consider pretty ridiculous, at worst their there to stir the pot. in addition even if the function of the group is either entertainment, or just legitimate problems, it still attracts the type of people who are only there to talk shit. there's also obviously a bit of misinformation, it becomes hard sort out the truth from the bent truth. obviously the anti group wants to paint the picture of brony's being this group of odd disturbing people who do questionable things, to say the least. they also want them to look, simply put, insane. with this in mind they pretty much have nothing good to say about the fandom, and everything they post is going to be bad. i know this all sounds obvious, i get that, but you have to understand how misinformation can really shape someones view on anything.
there's a thread on there talking about how a brony called the creator of the thread gay for not liking the show. okay, that sounds reasonable this guy got called gay for not liking the show obviously the brony should have thought his words better. but here's the problem, what he said was... actually he doesn't... he does not say what happened. I'm actually surprised by this, i just went back to look it up he does not say exactly what happened he doesn't even say WHAT happened. my assumption is that he said he disliked the show and some brony called him a fag for not liking it. but here's my problem he doesn't even attempt to say what happened, like no body cares what happened to provoke this response. this is my problem, it's entirely possible that he didnt not JUST say he disliked the show, he probably added in some dislike towards the show, maybe even some insults. then again we will probably never know CAUSE HE DOESN'T EVEN SAY!...
OH but it gets better, its not bad enough that he doesn't even attempt to give us context, but he proceeds to gender associate. yes, he sits here and associates the show as "girly", OH wait no, he doesn't just gender associate, he associates with sexual preference. I'm just going to say it, i HATE associations like this. its so pointless, so annoying, and honestly completely wrong. so let me ask you a question, what makes this show "girly"? is it the bright colors? the fact that most of the main cast are girls? oh wait, no I'm sorry it must be because it was made by a feminist, or because they dance and sing, or even because all the guys in the show are apparently "whipped". these are the reasons this show is girly, apparently. being girly would imply that the show has a gender, to which it does not.
i know its nitpicking, i get where he's coming from, he thinks its funny that someone who watches a "girls" show is calling him gay. i understand that, but he proceeds to try to prove that the show is "girly", in the words of the joker "if you have to explain the joke THERE IS NO JOKE". oh but that's not just it, he proceeds to talk about how he is all for gay rights RIGHT BEFORE continuing to call brony's gay. so you like homosexuals, but your willing to associate gayness with a group of people you dislike.
honestly the problem is that this post is the kind of post that bronies JUST LOVE. why? i just spent 3 paragraphs tearing the post apart, i could have gone on longer, i posted more about it then what was written in it. this post is just to easy to talk down upon, these kind of views are out of date. yeah, he's just calling a show girly, but its still gender association. like saying that being a stay at home parent is a woman's thing to do, or saying that cooking is something for girls... you get what I'm saying here? not only does it continue a thought process that should have died with the 50s, but it also separates him from us. the point of separation is to make it "okay" to hate the other group, well they're them it must be okay to dislike them they're nothing like us, i mean they're gay. i apologize for rambling on this one, but i REALLY dislike gender association, i just kinda dislike this type of association in general. because its generalizing, and more often then not, generalizing is wrong.
okay before i continue talking about my problems i would like to point out two things, one would be the comments. i don't know what it is about these comments but they have this way of sucking the FUN out of everything. i also quite enjoy how most of these threads have at least one person losing their faith in humanity. they have every right to say very depressing comments, but we're talking even on the satire, and joke threads that are meant to be funny. they still sit here and talk more about how stupid bronies are rather then look at the hilarity that just unfolded before their eyes...
speaking of jokes, this is one of the areas that i actually love about this group. i actually wish this group did it more often, because it really needs to be done more often. basically they take a story or something of that sort and continue to riff it. I'm pretty sure one of the mods is the only one who does it, but my god is it gold. I'm not joking here either i love every second of it. though some of the comments are kinda just straight insults, most of it is just awesome. its really hilarious and if you think this fandom can get quite ridiculous i highly suggest you go look it up. i am MORE then willing to link this, this is the kind of thing i support all the way, its hilarious. just, don't go read the comments, like i said fun vacuum.
i should probably talk about some of the problems i see this group has with the fandom. i can only think of two right at this moment, but if you have another for me to talk about ill try to edit it in or something.
1. ponification:
this is quite common, every other post or thread or something has at least a mention of it. the idea is to take an existing thing or person or fictional person, and turn it into a pony. now i get it, you don't like MLP:FIM, and it irritates you to see it invading other fandoms. hey maybe you went searching for one of these and found a picture of a ponified version.
but i have a few problems with this, first off one person can belong to multiple fandoms. fans of mlp can also be fans of say, futurama, team fortress two, and skyrim to name a few i can think of off the top of my head. honestly i actually like all of those things. its really not that farfetched to see them trying to combine their fandoms.
especially sense, two, the show condones the action. they have multiple points at least in season two that i can think of, where they ponified the ending to star wars: return of the jedi. they also ponified the characters from the big lebowski. that's not even to mention the reference fans dubbed "dr. hooves", hell it was the little winks and nudges to other ideas that actually kinda got me interested in the first place.
lastly, you could just, i don't know, ignore it. i know its been said a million times, and from what i can understand your response is its hard to ignore something that is everywhere. but here's the funny part. you see i have yet to see any of these ponifications outside of this group. i have yet to even get a glimpse at this fad that is ponification, and you know how? i don't go looking for it... honestly, you guys are going to find it because your LOOKING FOR IT!
to use an example that may not be the most appropriate but its the best comparison i can come up with. you see im into a lot of fetishes, but there are a couple that turn me off. now some of my fetishes actually somewhat coincide with some of the ones i don't like. so when searching for the ones i do like (on furaffinity) i often have to sort through the ones i don't like. its the exact same thing, i just ignore them.
2. pony porn
i would like to start off this one by saying that i do not look at pony porn, i do not condone it, and it does not turn me on.
that being said I'm still a little iffy as to who's right in this situation. honestly, i think its a case by case thing, that sometimes it is over the top and wrong, while other times its really not that bad.
now i admit, no one really knows the age of the main cast. i would make the argument that they have to be at least of age, because in the cartoon you see them with jobs and things of such. they're young, i understand that, but again i still would have to say that from the show they probably are of age. but again there's no way to prove one way or another.
so like i said case by case, i don't really like to tell people they cant look at something unless it is illegal. the worst part is "cub porn" is a thing that happens all the time on furaffinity. in fact one of the fetishes you can browse for is "baby furs".
i see it the same way i see scat, or water sports, or mutilation, or even snuff. its not my thing, i don't really like it that way and it really turns me off. but that doesn't mean its not A thing, and just because i don't like it doesn't mean others don't.
though to be honest i don't think people should be posting ANY porn on DA... i mean seriously guys there's e621 and furaffinity... really i don't hate them for disliking it, i just wish they would understand that its a fetish and some fetishes are weird... a lot of fetishes are weird actually.
i did drop a line to the creator of the group, asking for a quote talking about the positive points of the group. she never got back to me, so i guess that's that.
NAH I'm just kidding, i sent her a note and she was very polite about it all. unfortunately i think she had to leave somewhere and has yet to actually send me a comment. when/if she does i will gladly post it here.
she seems like a really nice person, and is one of the reasons i don't straight up hate the group. i know not all of them are "trolls" or whatever. i understand that not all of them are assholes, and i understand that most of them are probably pretty nice people.
at the end of the day, most of their actions are very hate filled. they are purposefully looking for these kind of things and it is a bit of a problem. i think another problem i have is that even if the group is very legitimate, and very good about its actions, it still attracts some of the wrong people. some of the users are there only to start shit, and to talk shit. but i suppose not even a well thought out argument could change their minds, although this probably wasn't as well thought out as i would like to think it was.
as for me? I'm pretty done with all this shit, I'll continue on enjoying the show, the music, and maybe the occasional art. but this whole anti group thing and this seeming war between the two is just tiring, and stressful. ill probably go back to the group once in a while to check on it if i feel like it, though ill definitely go back to read some of those stories, but other then that I'm done.
okay so here's that stupid disclaimer i was talking about. simply put if anyone wants to post something pointless then I'm just going to hide it. I'm not going to hide your post if you say something contrary to my point of view, in fact i might even try to talk to you about your thoughts. but if you come in here and say things like tl;dr or you mad, or some other pointless bullshit like that I'm not even going to give it the time of day. there's no point, and i don't care.
